Mr. Stancliffe, the owner of a vast fortune has died. His butler, Jarvis; the maid, Melody; and Mr. Stancliffe’s only living relative, Patrice; are there for the reading of the will. Patrice inherits the estate, with one clause, Jarvis may live out his life on the ranch, and Patrice may not sell it without his permission. Jarvis, has a surprise for Patrice. Acting on instructions from Mr. Stancliffe, he produces from the safe a formula of what appears to be a love potion. Made from the bark of the Brazilian walnut tree from “Amazonia,” the love potion does not affect the person who drinks it. Rather, it causes them to give off an almost imperceptible odor, which affects the vomeronasal organ of the opposite sex, with devastating effect. Before long, everyone is testing it with hilarious results.

In Foote’s mythical small town of Harrison, Texas, newlyweds Richard and Emily move in with her elderly and anxious parents, Lee and Lyd Davis. Richard seems like the ideal husband for Emily, whose first marriage ended in a sad divorce. But when Richard shows himself to be greedy and untrustworthy, tensions in the already-strained family threaten to cleave parents from child.

In the madcap comedy tradition of Lend me a Tenor, the Moon Over Buffalo centers on George and Charlotte Hay, fading stars of the 1950’s. At the moment, they are playing Private Lives and Cyrano De Bergerac in Buffalo, New York, with five actors. On the brink of a disastrous split-up caused by George’s dalliance with a young ingénue, they receive word that they might just have one last shot at stardom: Frank Capra is coming to town to see their matinee, and if he likes what he sees, he might cast them in his movie remake of The Scarlet Pimpernel.

But just as things are looking up, into their lives come two figures from the past who threaten to reveal histories they would rather keep hidden and to upset the delicate balance of their relationship.
